My dad was an enthusiast (had a 'Cuda (71 I think), a 240z, an original bug, some merc convertible (not sure what it was), a '69 'Vette (at least he held on to this one even though he never drives it), and more that I can't remember right now. But ever since i can remember his attitude has been "cars are a tool to get from point A to point B". I know deep down he still is an enthusiast, but for whatever reason he tries to hide it. Anyone else know anyone who is like this?

I don't know why he tries to hide it but it's there. He enjoys going to car shows, he kept that 'vette for 20+ years even though he drives it maybe once a year, and he has had some bad ass cars in the past...now I just have to figure out how to bring it back to the surface

He obviously loves the vette so have him take you to some sort of event in it and let him get out his inner gear head

I think some people are embarrassed about showing "passion" about anything. They probably think it shows weakness. Or perhaps they think it makes them look nerdy or "abnormal".

My dad is kind of the same way. Back in the day he used to have a Dodge Dart with a 440 that he inherited from his uncle when he passed. My dad drove it for a couple years then sold it because he couldn't afford the gas on it haha

He likes to give me shit about my obsession for cars, but whenever I'm in the garage working on my cars, he sticks around and watches me work and asks questions here and there. Just today I was putting new front brakes on the Baja Bug and he asked if he could help at all. I showed him how to disassemble a drum brake and he seemed to be enjoying it. When I took the engine out of the Bug when I bought it, he helped a ton and secretly enjoyed every minute of it haha

My dad is always bitching about saabs, their build quality, and their repair bills. And yet he refuses to buy anything else, shed an actual tear when they went under (it's REALLY hard to get him to show real emotion), is active on several forums, flew to trollhattan from Switzerland for a day trip to see the factory, has talked about getting a griffin tattoo, has a viggen t-shirt, has been to several owner conventions, and takes a picture of EVERY. SINGLE. pre-GM Saab he sees on the street. And yet he even seems annoyed when other owners talk to him about his cars (first an SPG, then a 900S, now a Viggen) or give him a wave.

Right now I live across the country from my parents, but am moving back soon. I plan on buying something that will need a little work. I know he'll be over helping me with it all the time, hell he even worked in an auto shop for a while too so he knows quite a bit about fixing cars.

He's always seemed to like the 1940's american coupes, he points them out on the road or spends a little longer looking at them at shows. I think maybe I'll find on of those...plus I think they are pretty sweet looking too
